  • India is reportedly preparing to Iran in rupees for oil cargoes it purchases from the country in a scheme meant to avoid the impacts of US sanctions

Soleimani is the head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Quds Force, which oversees Iran's military activities overseas and provides support to terror and paramilitary groups.

"Just to let you know..." the post trailed off provocatively, before adding congratulations for Iran's "excellent performance in the World Cup". Iran was knocked out of the tournament Monday after a 1-1 tie to Portugal and star Cristiano Ronaldo despite an inspiring performance.

The demonstrations appeared to lessen slightly on Tuesday after protesters forced Tehran's Grand Bazaar to shut down temporarily the day before.

The statement in Persian from the defense minster came as protests in Iran entered a second day.

Though the unrest at the Grand Bazaar had died down on Tuesday, local media were reporting smaller protests in the surrounding area.

The U.S.is pressing its allies to cut all oil imports from Iran by November 4, a senior State Department official said Tuesday.

Rouhani said Iran's success has never been pleasant to the US and the Zionist regime of Israel and they seek to harm the Iranians through imposing sanctions.

"Even in the worst case, I promise that the basic needs of Iranians will be provided". And yes, we will certainly be requesting that their oil imports go to zero. The official did not rule out the possibility that the White House would extend waivers to certain nations, but said that there are no active negotiations over such waivers at this time.

Britain, France, Germany and the European Union as a whole have strongly protested Trump's withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal and vowed to protect their companies from what are called "secondary sanctions", which punish companies from other countries that engage in business with sanctioned sectors of the Iranian economy.

"Withdrawal was the worst decision [the USA president] could make. It was appalling. It hurt America's global reputation", he added.

Trump has said staying in the 2015 nuclear accord went against U.S. national security interests, as he criticised Iran for continuing its ballistic missile programme and for supporting conflicts in places such as Yemen and Syria.

The pressure on Iran's economy since US President Trump withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal on May 8 has been more severe than originally forecast, Haaretz reported earlier this month.

Over the last several years, Iran has spent billions on foreign interventions around the Middle East, including the civil wars in Syria and Yemen, while also propping up terror groups like Hezbollah, Hamas and Islamic Jihad that target Israel. Since the start of the Syrian civil war in 2011, Tehran has poured a reported $6 billion into propping up president Bashar Assad's government. Chants of "We don't want the ayatollahs" and "Death to the dictator" were also heard at some rallies.

On Monday, police patrolled the bazaar following clashes with protesters angered by the rial's collapse, which is disrupting business by driving up the cost of imports. Those demonstrations, which largely took place outside of Tehran in some 75 smaller cities and towns, were seen as the largest protests since 2009.
