'He destroyed our trust in 280 characters': German minister slams Trump

  • US President Donald Trump accuses India of charging 100 per cent tariff on some imports

British Prime Minister Theresa May, who also attended the G7 summit in Canada, stood with Trudeau on the issue of trade.

"As far as this retaliation goes, the American press needs to do a much better job of what the Canadians are getting ready to do because it's nothing short of an attack on our political system and it's nothing short of Canada trying to raise its high protectionist barriers even higher on things like maple syrup and other goods", he said.

Trump also renewed attacks on Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who had hosted the G7 meeting in Quebec.

President of the European Council Donald Tusk said that "There is a special place in heaven for Justin Trudeau".

"The U.S. pays close to the entire cost of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation - protecting many of these same countries that rip us off on trade (they pay only a fraction of the cost - and laugh!)", he tweeted.

Trump and Trudeau have been at odds ever since the United States announced in late May that Canada will no longer be exempt from steel and aluminum tariffs, a decision that Trudeau described as "totally unacceptable".

Trump, who is pushing his "America First" policy, said his ultimate goal was the elimination of all trade duties. He says that we are the problem with tariffs.

Of the 32 states that count Canada as their biggest export destination, 20 voted for Trump in the 2016 election.

Canada responded by slapping tariffs on $12.8billion worth of U.S. exports, including metals, toilet paper, ball point pens and pizza.

The president seems to think raising USA tariffs will accomplish that end. The EU also charges higher tariffs than the USA on dairy products, fruits and vegetables, coffee and tea, cereal, confections, and fish, among other products. But it's worth asking the question of what toll unleashing a full-scale character assassination - "there's a special place in hell" is pretty strong stuff - on Canada's head of government means for how the United States is perceived in the world.

It appears as though Trump is the one performing a stunt, raging at Trudeau in theatrical fashion without a clear reason to be so worked up.

"There are always irritants in relationships", Pompeo said while in Singapore for a summit between Trump and North Korea's Kim Jong Un.

"PM Justin Trudeau of Canada acted so meek and mild during our G7 meetings only to give a news conference after I left saying that, "US Tariffs were kind of insulting" and he 'will not be pushed around.' Very dishonest & weak".

On Friday, Trump called for Russian Federation to be added to the summit to restore it the G8, a statement that Nebraska Republican Sen.

Kudlow told CNN Sunday morning that Trudeau "stabbed [the United States] in the back" with his comments during a press conference the previous day that Canada will take "retaliatory measures" in response to the Trump administrations tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, the European Union, and Mexico.

In a tense interview today with CNN's Jake Tapper on "State of the Union", Trump's economic advisor Larry Kudlow lambasted Trudeau.

But unity was torn apart when the U.S. president took exception to Mr Trudeau calling USA policy "insulting".

Peter Navarro, a trade adviser for Trump, was even more damning in his comments about Trudeau.

June 9 - Trump extols his relationship with Trudeau and Canada as a 10 out of 10, blasting reports of a rift as "fake news".

He concluded: "Sorry, we can not let our friends, or enemies, take advantage of us on Trade anymore".
