  • New 'Star Trek' Series Developed by Alex Kurtzman — Picard Returns?

Screenwriter and executive producer Alex Kurtzman was named Discovery's new showrunner, and now Kurtzman will also be at the helm of additional Star Trek television projects.

CBS Television Studios declined to confirm any specific projects, but we hear there are three different Trek concepts now in development.

Star Trek: Discovery is now in production on season two for CBS All Access, with Kurtzman tapped to direct the premiere.

"Heather [Kadin], Aaron [Baiers] and I are thrilled to continue Secret Hideout's awesome partnership with CBS Television Studios", said Kurtzman.

And whereas Star Trek: Discovery runs on the CBS All Access streaming service in the U.S. and Netflix internationally, the new deal includes having these shows potentially air on broadcast channels, cable and streaming services. Variety reports that there are several new shows set in the universe already in development, including a series set at Starfleet Academy from the same folks behind the CW reboot of Dynasty, Gossip Girl, and Hulu/Marvel's Runaways.

Kurtzman was recently made sole showrunner of Star Trek: Discovery following the dismissal of previous co-showrunners Aaron Harberts and Gretchen Berg who left amidst reports of bullying behavior in the writers room. THR adds that one project might have Patrick Stewart reprising his Star Trek: The Next Generation role as Capt. Pickard, though that deal is far from done.

"The full team at CBS Studios have been our foremost collaborators and champions, treating each project with integrity, supporting the creative visions and working breathlessly to make each episode of every show the best it can be".

A limited series based on the "Wrath of Khan" story, which was portrayed multiple times in "Star Trek" history. Along with executive producing Star Trek: Discovery, Kurtzman has credits on J.J. Abrams' film adaptations of the series, so he has had some pretty significant experience with the Star Trek universe. "His talent, taste and ability to shepherd a successful project is unparalleled. CBS has also allowed us the great pleasure of reintroducing the world of Star Trek audiences new and old, and we are very excited to keep working alongside them to expand that world".

Star Trek: Discovery will be back next year. If so, it would mark the first official continuation of the TNG timeline since Star Trek: Nemesis.
