  • Apple's Face Time gets a huge upgrade video conferencing with up to 32 people

Here's a look at the newest features coming soon to the iPhone when iOS 12 launches as a free software update in the Fall.

Apple also intends to crack down on data companies' ability to identify specific devices by creating a unique fingerprint based on a device's settings, installed fonts and plug-ins.

Earlier this year, Google revealed a similar feature at its annual developer's conference, with a new dashboard created to increase awareness of time spent on your phone, a feature allowing users to cap time spent on particular apps, and a "wind down" feature to help prevent late-night scrolling. Apple, however, didn't discuss improvements to Siri's underlying technology, which has been criticized by some users.

These new tools in iOS 12 and MacOS are accompanied by new features from Apple in the realm of augmented reality, showing the tricky balance companies have between promoting immersiveness as well as digital well-being. Apple is also expected to discuss its plans for pairing its devices with healthcare initiatives and could at least discuss some long-awaited hardware, like a new iPad Pro.

Last year, Apple added "intelligent tracking prevention" that imposes time limits on tracking cookies and takes other measures to try to prevent advertising tech companies from following users around the web.

Companies like Adobe are adopting the USDZ format to work with its Creative Cloud platform, which includes apps like Photoshop and Dimension. What remains to be seen is whether there is enough of a compelling reason for someone to use AR, even if it's built-in to everyday apps.

Apple's privacy and security updates are part of a calculated move to prioritize long-term customer loyalty over shorter-term metrics such as engagement, said Horace Dediu, an Apple analyst with Asymco.

First up, users can expect a newly refreshed News app in iOS 12, incorporating new features like a simplified search and easy offline reading mode.

This update also brings Grouped Notifications, at long last. Apple's also introducing multiplayer gaming with augmented reality, so several people could be looking at the same augmented reality object from different angles. Will virtual assistant Siri be able to catch up with archrivals Assistant from Google and Alexa from Amazon?

But it's not just Apple who are keen for us to put down our phones and engage with the real world. The apps would be displayed when users searched using certain keywords in Pinterest, say, or Snapchat, according to the report.

Apple also rolled out group video chat sessions with up to 32 users, putting it in direct competition with companies such as Cisco Systems Inc (CSCO.O) and Microsoft Corp's (MSFT.O) Skype.
