Bennett stopped the clock 3min 4sec behind stage victor Rohan Dennis to post the 56th fastest time The LottoNL-Jumbo rider now sits 10th place on the general classification standings, 7min 1sec back from leader Simon Yates who limited his losses to his closest rival Tom Dumoulin.

Simon Yates has been in imperious form on the Giro Italia climbs and now he has backed it up with a commendable display in the time trial to make himself outright favourite for the title.

There theoretically shouldn't be major time gaps on the stage, but with plenty of riders desperate to make back time, it could lead to some fireworks near the end.

But a gutsy ride from the race leader Yates saw the 25-year-old Mitchelton-Scott rider limit his losses to just 75 seconds to chief rival Dumoulin - leaving him with a healthy lead of 56 seconds going into the final phase of the race.

But France's Thibaut Pinot lost more than three minutes on the stage victor to drop to fifth overall, 1min 8sec off Italy's Domenico Pozzovivo who occupies the final podium position.

With the climbers having had fun in the mountains in the last couple of days before a rest day on Monday, stage 16 sees the riders face a 34.2km time trial on largely flat and untechnical valley roads between Trento and Rovereto. I gave everything today.
