Twitter'stroll problem has not improved, despite various measures taken by the company.
Accounts exhibiting suspicious behaviours would now be "less visible" on the platform, it said, particularly in public conversations and search results.
The initiative is all part of an attempt to boost "healthy" conversations and demote malicious or cynical responses within those conversations, according to Twitter bosses.
Still, Twitter's discourse is often colored by such tweets, and banning the people involved seems like a good way to open the platform to cries of censorship (well, more open than it is already).
The company will hide certain replies from conversations and search results in a bid to "improve the health of the conversation" on Twitter. One important issue we've been working to address is what some might refer to as "trolls".
It actually sounds pretty simple at first: according to a Twitter blog post Tuesday, the company will simply organize conversations on Twitter differently based on "behavioral signals" created to root out trolls in "communal areas" of the social network.
"We're also looking at how accounts are connected to those that violate our rules and how they interact with each other", Twitter added.
Twitter has made little effort to be transparent about the kind of signals it looks for when seeking to identify accounts that, in their words, "distort the conversation". This technology and our team will learn over time and will make mistakes.
"While still a small overall number, these accounts have a disproportionately large - and negative - impact on people's experience on Twitter", they said.
"The challenge for us has been: how can we proactively address these disruptive behaviours that do not violate our policies but negatively impact the health of the conversation".
Tweets that are determined to most likely be bad aren't just automatically deleted, but they'll get cast down into the "Show more replies" section where less eyes will encounter them.
The company said most of the new signals it will deploy will not be visible to people. "Behavioral signals" that could lead you to being hidden include, but are not limited to, not confirming your email address, signing up for multiple accounts at the same time, repeatedly tweeting at or mentioning accounts that don't follow you, and/or engaging in other behavior that "might indicate a coordinated attack".
