Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has convened the first of three roundtable meetings to address school violence and safety.

The high school student also rejected the idea that Santa Fe High School will only be remembered for the shooting. Texas Gun Sense, which advocates for further gun restrictions, is expected to attend Abbott's discussion Wednesday.

Texas has some of the most lenient gun laws in the country.

Pagourtzis, who business records show owns North American Marine Inc., a ship fix and industrial cleaning company in Houston, north of Santa Fe, told the Journal he struggled to get where he is today.

After the meeting Tuesday, Abbott said the results of the roundtable shows that politician's actions are already more than just talk.

In a letter on Tuesday, Santa Fe School District Superintendent Leigh Wall said that Santa Fe High School's graduation will be held at 7:30 p.m. on June 1 at Joe Raitano Memorial Stadium.

Abbott says everyone shares a "common goal - to protect innocent lives". But they're also of a generation that has grown up in the age of increasingly regular school shootings.

The Republican has been a staunch supporter of gun rights and worked to expand them in the state in recent years.

"I know a school district in the Houston area that's got 20,000 students who've got undocumented parents", he said.

"We're grieving differently. Mainly, we just want to be left alone - is what the community wants", McGuire said.

A 17-year-old student accused of fatally shooting 10 people at a Texas high school should be seen as a "victim" because he may have recently been bullied, causing him to lash out, his father said.

Police arrested Dimitrios Pagourtzis, 17, at the Santa Fe school following the rampage they said he committed with a shotgun and.38-caliber pistol.

He told the outlet that his son was the "family's pillar".

His father says he owns guns but that the boy doesn't.

"He kept making advances on her and she repeatedly told him no", said Rodriguez over Facebook Messenger. He says he thinks someone might have hurt his son and that this could have prompted the attack.

They include a gun owner who lived near the church and shot at and chased the gunman who eventually shot himself.

"He never got into a fight with anyone".

Eight students and two teachers were killed in the shooting, which was reportedly carried out against people Pagourtzis felt mistreated him.

The Republican-controlled legislature is out of session until January 2019, making it almost impossible for the state to implement and fund any major changes that come out of this week's talks.

Texas has 5.4 million students enrolled in its public schools and any changes it made statewide would be costly.

Two school resource officers arrived at the school about four minutes after the shooting started and engaged Dimitrios, enabling other officers to evacuate teachers, administrators and students, Galveston County Sheriff Henry Trochesset said. The first one features officials from districts that arm some teachers or contract with local police for security.
