  • Streaky Harvick Wins Kansas Cup Series Race

Kevin Harvick continued his hot streak Friday as he won the pole for NASCAR's 2018 KC Masterpiece 400 at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, Kansas. As mentioned in the Practice Notes this week, there have been 63 such infractions in the last 10 races here and just in the last four alone (both 2016 and both 2017 races), drivers have been dinged 28 times for speeding at various parts of pit road. A victor for the fourth time this year at Dover, Harvick also captured the pole for the KC Masterpiece 400 at Kansas Speedway, nearly assuring he'd start out front again. Larson was asked by FS1 reporter Jamie Little if the sag was because of a collision with Ryan Blaney on Lap 248 of 267 while battling for third.

Harvick finished second, with Brad Keselowski, Joey Logano and Larson rounding out the top five, respectively.

It was Larson's first stage win since Homestead last November. Harvick radioed in that he thought he may have a tire going down, but he turned out to be just fine and set to work trying to hunt down the 12. Denny Hamlin rounded out the top five for Joe Gibbs Racing. Blaney and Larson came in together, but Larson came out on the track in front, and he cycled through until he was pretty much right behind Harvick. On lap 237, the answer finally switched from yes to no, with Daniel Suarez blowing a tire and going into the wall and running into Alex Bowman.

The race had barely returned to green when William Byron triggered a heavy wreck in front of the main grandstand. I was tight in traffic there then Blaney was side-drafting really hard and I was as high as I could get and we made contact.

Truex used some pit strategy to restart in the lead, and quickly built a buffer. But the No. 4 vehicle swept past Logano and Hamlin on the outside to put Truex in his sights, then closed down the lead until finally overtaking the reigning series champion with a lap to go.

"They're hitting on all cylinders", Truex said. We just needed more time in practice to sort things out.

Jimmie Johnson leads all active drivers with three Cup checkered flags here. In turn, the latter got off to a rough start in his MENCS return as he also failed inspection earlier in the weekend, causing him to start from the back of the field.

Kyle Larson started at the back after a spin-out in qualifying forced him to change tires.

"We just had a really good vehicle tonight; our Clover Chevrolet was fast", said Larson.

(11) Paul Menard, Ford, 267. The Roush Fenway Racing driver then had an uneventful conclusion to his first race of the 2018 season, finishing 36th. Chase Elliott, Chevrolet, 267 13.

New Hampshire Motor Speedway officials announced on Friday that Loverboy will be the pre-race concert before the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race on Sunday, July 22.
