According to Liaison Officer Gyanendra Sherstha, Xia stood atop the Mt Everest at 8:40 am today.

Xia lost his legs after his first attempt on Everest in 1975, when he was part of the Chinese Mountaineering Team, after he lent a teammate his sleeping bag.

If successful, Xia Boyu will be the first ever double-amputee to reach Everest's summit from the south side. Steve Plain scaled Everest on Monday, completing the seven peaks in 117 days.

A surfing accident in 2014 left Plain with multiple injuries but he recovered to continue mountain climbing. As a result, he contracted severe frostbite, which eventually resulted in the amputation of his legs. Then, in 1996, his legs were amputated above the knee as he battled lymphoma.

The Chinese climber's son, Cloud Xia, marked Monday's feat on China's WeChat messaging platform, saying his father "realized his 40 year dream", Time reports. "I have to realise it".

Benegas, a veteran Everest guide, told Outside Magazine, "In my many years of working in Nepal, I have never been made aware a permit is required to ski on Mt. Everest". In 2016, a blizzard forced him to return while he was 200 feet away from the summit.

However, a ban on climbers like Xia nearly ended his attempts.

Xia is among the first of the hundreds of climbers who are expected to scale the world's highest mountain this month during a narrow window of good weather.

The authorities said the new rules were a safety measure but they were struck down by the courts earlier this year as discriminatory.

Everest's summit season got off to a frantic start Monday with at least 30 climbers reaching the peak, including a Chinese double amputee and an Australian who set a new world record. With AP Photos. An expedition organizer says an Australian mountaineer has scaled Mount Everest to become the fastest to climb the highest peaks on all seven continents.

At 8,850-meters high, Everest was first scaled by New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay in 1953.

Expert Sherpa guides are chosen to open up the path to the summit and fix ropes for other climbers.
