French Open organisers announced on Monday they will not give Williams a seeding.

"Historically, WTA players have not been supportive of the use of special rankings for seeding purposes", the tour said in a statement to the Associated Press, adding, "We remain committed to evolving with the needs of our players and are very supportive of those players returning from maternity leave to the tour".

Serena Williams will not be given a seed at the French Open because she is ranked 453rd in the world.

The company is celebrating the 23-time Grand Slam champion's return to the clay court for the first time since winning the Australian Open while pregnant in 2017.

And while Williams is able to enter eight tournaments a year with a protected ranking - a system that allows players sidelined with pregnancy or long-term injuries to use their ranking at the start of their absence - she can not be seeded in Paris under current regulations. Williams took her leave as the No. 1 player in the world but has dropped to No. 453 following a 14-month absence from playing on tour.

"It's normal to give birth".

"Then everything was fine for the first, like, you know, eight to 12 hours", she said.

The other three Grand Slam hosts have seen similar struggles in recent years, with Andy Roddick the last American man to win the US Open in 2003, while Mark Edmondson was the most recent Australian victor at Melbourne Park back in 1976.

Several of Williams' biggest rivals believe she deserves a seeding. Former world number five Eugenie Bouchard has already failed in her quest, retiring hurt against Dalila Jakupovic on Wednesday.

French Open Preview: From Serena's comeback to Nadal's reign, here's all you need to know about Roland Garros 2018
Not seeding Serena in wrong — Evert

She found out on Monday that she will not be seeded, which could make for a hard path through the tournament. She was not seeded at either tournament.

A run of 13 wins in a row was only ended by 10-time French Open victor Nadal on Sunday, and Zverev is looking to continue his momentum. If you are forced out for a specific reason, whether it be maternity or injury, you need to be protected.

"I don't think that there was too much of a difference", Djokovic said after that setback, "which is great for me, great news for me".

"Consequently, (the seeds) will reflect this week's world ranking".

"I do expect that this rule will be reviewed further as part of our 2019 rules process".

"It's not as if she left because of injury and lost her passion for the game", Blake said.

Nadal, who is the defending champion on the men's side, is in search of his 11th French Open title, while Williams will be chasing her 24th overall Grand Slam crown.

"It's wrong, they should protect players", Evert, who will be working for broadcaster ESPN during the Paris fortnight, told Reuters by telephone.
