Senate Approves Measure Protecting Net Neutrality

  • Senate takes first step to save net neutrality rules voting to overturn FCC action

"That's why I strongly opposed the FCC's decision to repeal basic net neutrality protections, and today I voted to protect net neutrality rules".

The FCC's new anti-net-neutrality regulation, set to take effect next month, eliminates those prohibitions. And the high-profile vote could shine a spotlight on lawmakers running for reelection during a tough midterm season. "We'll be taking careful note of where each member stands and won't stop advocating for Net Neutrality until the rights of all internet users are restored".

"I have voted to pass this resolution today so that we can reset the discussion and move beyond the politics at play here to what is really needed-lasting legislation that will provide certainty and move us beyond shifting regulatory standards that depend on who is running the FCC". Chip Pickering, CEO of INCOMPAS and a former Republican Congressman from MS, said "This is a win for young Americans who want to start a business and consumers who have cut the cord and love the streaming revolution". Edward Markey, D-Mass., who is leading the CRA effort, said on the Senate floor Wednesday morning. All Democrats and Independents voted for it, and all but three Republicans voted against it. Kennedy told the Washington Post that his vote "was a fairly close call, but I'll tell you what it comes down to: The extent to which you trust your cable company". But I'm pretty sure our House colleagues are going to side with big cable companies who are hoping that the public did not notice that the Trump-era FCC rolled back strong internet protections. "The American people have spoken".

And if you're still confused by this whole net neutrality debate thing, we've got you covered here. It will also have to be passed by the House, where Republicans have a more significant majority, and then be signed into law by the President. Net neutrality is important because it prevents internet providers from charging more for fast access to content, or from blocking or slowing down access to content.

Repealing net neutrality rules was one of Pai's primary objectives when he was appointed as chairman of the Commission by President Trump a year ago.

There is still a point to the Senate vote. "This bill will restore a free and open internet, putting businesses, classrooms, and health care just a click away".

Activist groups Demand Progress, Fight for the Future and Free Press Action Fund have backed the Democrats' legislative initiative, launching the Red Alert for Net Neutrality campaign.

The FCC's Republican majority, led by chairman Ajit Pai, claim that the rules were choking off investment and imposed service regulation on broadband akin to that placed on phone companies in the 1930s.

The FCC's move stirred opposition in Congress and in statehouses.
