Un matrimonio de Portland, estado de Oregon, usaba varios auxiliares Echo, de Amazon, en su casa. Según las víctimas de esta verdadera invasión a la privacidad, "los ejecutivos de Amazon nos ofrecieron disculpas muchas veces y dijeron que era algo que debía arreglarse".

El Echo se despertó debido a una palabra en una conversación de fondo que sonó como "Alexa".

Luego, la conversación siguiente la escuchó como una petición de 'enviar mensaje'. En ese punto, Alexa dijo en alto: "'¿A quién?' Y justo en ese momento la conversación de fondo fue interpretada como un nombre que había en la lista de contactos del cliente", confirmó a la BBC un portavoz de Amazon.

Teniendo en cuenta la improbabilidad de que todos estos hechos ocurran, la compañía señaló que están buscando soluciones: "Por improbable que sea esta serie de eventos, estamos evaluando opciones para hacer que este caso sea aún menos probable". Empresas como Amazon y Google dicen que sus dispositivos solo comienzan a grabar cuando sus micrófonos oyen una palabra o frase activadora, como "Alexa" o "Hey Google". Mientras que algunos usuarios explicaron que los estallidos se producían de forma completamente espontánea, otros afirmaron que tenían lugar cuando le pedían al altavoz que encendiera la luz.
