  • Reliever Carson Smith reacts after giving up a home run Monday night. He threw his glove after leaving the game and injured his shoulder

Reliever Carson Smith is on the DL with a potentially "major" shoulder injury after he threw his glove in disgust after his relief outing Monday night at Fenway Park.

Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski suggested it could be a significant injury, and that surgery was possible. Smith gave up a leadoff home run to Khris Davis in the top of the eighth inning, which extended the Athletics' lead to 6-4.

Dombrowski said the injury is "unfortunate".

Smith is 1-1 with a 3.77 ERA and 18 strikeouts in 18 appearances for the Red Sox this season.

To replace Smith, the Red Sox recalled left-hander Bobby Poyner from Triple-A Pawtucket. There is now no timetable for Smith's recovery, but Dombrowski said, "It's got the potential of being a major injury". The 28-year-old appeared in just three games during the 2016 season before undergoing Tommy John surgery. He also pitched 1.1 scoreless innings over two games in the ALDS against the Houston Astros.
