Joe Root will lead out the side at Lord's in the first of two matches against Pakistan, desperate to put behind him a heavy Ashes defeat in Australia and a rare loss to New Zealand which have left England in a state of flux and fifth in the world test rankings.

The last time these sides met at cricket's spiritual home it was Pakistan who ran out winners, a victory extravagantly and amusingly celebrated with a team display of press ups on the Lord's outfield.

One of those new players was Test debutant Imam-ul-Haq. The third wicket also fell to Hasan Ali when David Malan was caught behind for six runs. The batting collapse has often been something of a Pakistani speciality, and without the twin colossi of Misbah and Younis, and with the strength of England's bowling in home conditions, getting consistent runs from their line up will be their biggest concern. Asad Shafiq, babar Azam, Sarfraz Ahmed (c), Shadab Khan, Faheem Ashraf, Hasan Ali, Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Abbas.

Pakistan, seventh in the Test rankings, come into this game on the back of a five-wicket win over Test debutants in Ireland, where the conditions were similar to those they could face at Lord´s if confronted with a typical early-season English pitch offering seam movement and some overcast skies.

One man who may feel a little fortunate to still be in the side is Mark Stoneman, who has endured a miserable start to the County Championship season but who impressed those who mattered sufficiently during England's hard winter.

England captain Joe Root selected paceman Mark Wood over Chris Woakes, who would have been a second all-rounder in the team along with Ben Stokes.

Spinner Dom Bess had already been assured of his England debut while Jos Buttler returned to the Test arena for the first time since 2016.

"If you see England's last four months they are not good for them", said Sarfraz.
