  • Samsung maintains lead on declining global smartphone market as Xiaomi and Huawei make big gains

OPPO, vivo, Samsung in the top 10 smartphone category reported declines in Q1 2018. While itel itself broke into the top ten for the first time, the brand's parent company Transsion Holdings also controls the Tecno and Infinix brands.

OEM performance insights * Samsung led the smartphone market by volume with a market share of 22 percent in Q1 2018.

Samsung's shipment grew 5% QoQ with the launch of its latest flagship, Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus. 2018 has marked the introduction into the market of Samsung's highly-acclaimed Galaxy S9 and S9+ smartphones.

However, the company teased the design by revealing the rear view of the device. Google has achieved its highest ever quarterly sales share of 3.4%, up from 1.7% a year earlier, thanks to the success of its Pixel line.

Counterpoint suggests, though, that Apple is still more dominant than Xiaomi in China.

Huawei shipments grew 14 percent YoY in Q1 2018 even though growth in China slowed down considerably.

Oppo already maintains a strong position in India in the upper mid-range market and the company is now hoping the Realme brand will allow the company to crack the affordable smartphone market as well, but only time will tell if the Realme 1 is capable enough to do the trick. To add to the conjecture is the fact that, Oppo, like Xiaomi, may also start assembling their smartphones locally in India.

OPPO, just like its sister brand Vivo, has so far mainly targeted the offline segment in India by spending heavily on promotions and marketing. With a market share of 11.4 percent, 8.2 percent and 7 percent, Huawei, Xiaomi and OPPO claimed the third, fourth, and the fifth spot, respectively. The bad news is that global smartphone shipments are falling. While the Motorola brand did well, it was Lenovo smartphones that registered decline during the quarter. Apple's ultra-premium iPhone X is proving relatively popular in some markets like China and the United States, while there remains scope for additional expansion in emerging regions such as India and Africa.

ZTE's growth continues to struggle as the U.S. component ban came as an added disadvantage which has led to declining market share.

Strategy Analytics pegs the quarter's total phone sales at 345 million units, a drop of 2%, and the firm's Linda Sui places blame on "longer replacement rates, diminishing carrier subsidies, and a lack of new hardware design innovation". "Most encouraging for Huawei are the signs that progress is finally being made in Great Britain, with share rising to 5.9% - it needs to conquer this market if it's going to realise its ambition of becoming a premium choice for consumers".
