  • Robinson Cano suspended 80 games by MLB for drug policy violation: report

The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced today that second baseman Robinson Canó of the Seattle Mariners has received an 80-game suspension without pay after testing positive for Furosemide, a Diuretic, in violation of Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

The suspension begins immediately, though Cano, 35, an eight-time all-star, is now on the disabled list with a broken hand after getting hit by a pitch Sunday. In his case, that's a hefty chunk of change. As with all players who fail a PED test, Cano is no longer eligible for this year's postseason. He remains a virtual shoo-in to reach 3,000 hits - he has 2,417 with five more years on his contract - and those achievements would have surely made him a lock for the Hall of Fame.

"For more than fifteen years, playing professional baseball has been the greatest honor and privilege of my life".

"He made a mistake", the Mariners said.

"I would never do anything to cheat the rules of the game that I love". "Our organization fully supports the program", the Mariners said in a statement. He has explained to us what happened, accepted the punishment and has apologized to the fans, the organization and his teammates. Cano is now on the disabled list after fracturing his hand in the Mariners' 5-4 loss to the Detroit Tigers on Sunday. He was scheduled to see a specialist in Philadelphia on Tuesday, which could bring a more precise timetable to what is in line to be an extended injury absence.

Cano released a statement through the MLBPA following the announcement of his suspension, which is effective immediately, accepting that he had taken the substance but that he had not done so to gain an unfair advantage. Since 2007, Cano has played at least 150 games each season. He will lose his salary for the 80 games, an accumulation of more than $11 million.

Cano, 35, is batting.287 with four home runs and 23 RBIs this season. He's appeared healthier and quicker than the past few seasons when he's played through leg injuries that at times limited his range.
