Jared Kushner Regains Top Security Clearance

  • Jared Kushner is not only family he's also the US President's senior aid

The White House defended the lengthy process for issuing a permanent clearance to Kushner, citing the senior adviser's myriad business dealings and complicated finances.

Kushner, President Donald Trump's son-in-law, has been granted permanent security clearance.

Some had expected Kushner might not receive a permanent clearance for the duration of Mueller's investigation.

"There was nobody in the political process that had anything to do with it", Kushner's lawyer Abbe Lowell told Wolf Blitzer in response to a question about the process of having the clearance restored. "In each occasion, he answered all questions asked and did whatever he could to expedite the conclusion of all the investigations".

He said Kushner's clearance was decided by career officials in the intelligence community and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

"I have no doubt that the criminal investigation delayed his adjudication, and it is reasonable now to interpret that this decision - especially in light of the recent interview - indicates that he is out the crosshairs", Zaid said. He could lose his clearance tomorrow if he is indicted. The ousted White House staff secretary worked with the same temporary clearance Kushner had at the time, and Kushner reportedly had a dispute with John Kelly when the chief of staff tried to address the scandal by yanking security clearance from anyone who didn't have full clearance. Kushner lost access to some files, including those containing intelligence on foreign leaders and diplomats that can be used to gain an advantage in negotiations.

CNN pointed out, however, Kushner's perceived troubles were compounded at least in part because his initial security clearance application did not list dozens of foreign contacts that he included in later updated submissions to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. "Throughout the process, Mr. Kushner has continued to work on a number of foreign policy and domestic issues with no interruption".

"With respect to the news about his clearances, as we stated before, his application was properly submitted, reviewed by numerous career officials and underwent the normal process", Lowell said.

"A year ago, Jared was one of the first to voluntarily cooperate with any investigation into the 2016 campaign and related topics", said Lowell, Kushner's lawyer.

Kushner had to file three updates to his national security questionnaire, a form that guides the Federal Bureau of Investigation background check and asks for information about a person's employment history, finances, family, travel and other matters.

Part of that investigation is examining meetings Kushner attended in 2016 with Russian representatives and officials.
