  • Two foreign climbers die while scaling world's highest peak, say Nepalese officials

A 63-year-old climber from the southeastern Europe died while attempting to climb the world's highest mountain this afternoon, according to base camp officials.

His body was discovered by Sherpas, tourism department official Gyanendra Shrestha said from base camp.

Mr Kuriki made headlines through his dogged refusal to accept defeat, returning to the highest mountain in the world after each of seven failed attempts more determined to reach the 8,848m (29,029ft) summit.

"The climber breathed his last at an altitude of 7500m on the Tibetan side when he was descending to lower camps after suffering from altitude sickness at around 8000m on the mountain", officials at the Tibet Mountaineering Association said. He was found dead at his camp at 7,400 metres mountain.

"We are in shock", Tika Ram Gurung, the managing director of Bochi-Bochi Trek, the climbing company that organized his trip, told the New York Times. The Japan Times reported that Kuriki slipped and fell, and earlier reports said he was found dead in his tent.

"I am here at 7,400 meters now", Kuriki wrote in one of his final posts on Facebook, The Himalayan Times reported. "I have not reached my retirement age, and until I retire I will continue to be a guide on Everest", he said.

Kuriki suffered severe frostbite during an ascent in 2012 and lost nine digits.

A Sherpa guide and a Macedonian climber died on Everest this season. "This was his dream and he never let it go".

He has also climbed numerous region's other high peaks, including K-2, Cho-Oyu, Manaslu and Lhotse. Second image: Nobukazu poses with Nepalese flag after speaking engagement.
