Ballistic blocks, earthquakes and ocean plumes: In the three weeks since Hawaii's Kilauea began erupting, it has produced some awe-inspiring - and risky - phenomena.

Kilauea Volcano shot lava several stories into the air and built cinder cones in Leilani Estates at what is now the end of Kahukai Street on Wednesday evening. Seven instruments aboard NASA 's International Space Station and partner satellites have been detecting active fissures, fires, ash and sulphur dioxide plume as well as the height and composition of volcanic plumes, a NASA release explains.

"Fissure 7 is producing the most volume of lava". "We're [filling] any gaps they may have in their information as the disaster is evolving".

The Leilani Estates neighborhood, where the volcano has been gushing lava on the big island of Hawaii for the past three weeks, is seen at center left part. It has been erupting on a continuous basis since 1983.

So far, more than 2,000 people have been evacuated from the area as almost two dozen fissures opened in the ground and lava slowly moved toward the sea. When lava buries plants and shrubs, methane gas is produced as a byproduct of burning vegetation.

Major Jeff Hickman of the Hawaii National Guard led the media out to record the activity. Hawaii County Civil Defense announced Thursday the situation remains stable.

Underscoring the eruption's dangers, a Hawaii man was hit by a flying piece of lava over the weekend said the molten rock almost sheared his leg in half.

The U.S. Marine Corps said Thursday that it has sent two CH-53E Super Stallion helicopters from a base near Honolulu to help if more evacuations become necessary. Each helicopter can carry up to 50 people at a time. Crystal Symphony cruises also said it planned to return to the two ports after canceling a Wednesday Hilo stop due to "an abundance of caution".

Authorities say that the situation at Puna Geothermal Venture remained stable at last report with no further encroachment reported overnight.

In addition, trace ashfall over the Kau district from Kilauea Volcano was still a concern.

Two of the three main lava channels from the volcanic eruption on Hawaii's Big Island have merged to create only two entry points into the Pacific Ocean, according to USGS scientist Jim Kauahikaua.

The ash is settling in small communities that are downwind. On the inset map (lower right), the dark purple area indicates locations of Kilauea volcano's east rift zone, southwest rift zone, and summit and the light purple area indicates the extent of Kīlauea.
