Apple to offer credit for battery replacements

  • Apple knew the iPhone 6 bent like crazy before it went on sale

Anyone who paid to get their iPhone 6 battery fixed between 1 January, 2017 and 28 December, 2017 is eligible for the payout.

Apple started sending out emails to eligible customers today, and all eligible customers should have been contacted by July 27th.

Apple appears to be extending their apology now by offering this $50 credit to customers who paid the full $79 for a battery replacement in 2017.

The move comes after it was discovered earlier this year that Apple throttles CPU speeds on iPhones with older batteries.

US District Court judge Lucy Koh wrote in the documents that "one of the major concerns Apple identified prior to launching the iPhones was that they were "likely to bend more easily when compared to previous generations".

For those who paid for in-warranty iPhone battery replacements, they are not eligible. In India, the company charged Rs 2,000 (plus taxes) for any user with an iPhone 6 or later, whose battery needs to be replaced.

"The 3,900 INR credit will be provided as an electronic funds transfer or a credit on the credit card used to pay for the battery replacement service".

Apple claimed at the time its batteries should retain up to 80 per cent of their original capacity at 500 complete charge cycles - in other words, after using all of the battery's power 500 times.

Remember #Bendgate? Back in September 2014, just days after the launch of the Apple iPhone 6 and Apple iPhone 6 Plus, several owners of the latter model complained that the handset would bend if carried for too long in a front pocket. There is still no word about what will happen after December 31 2018, as Apple only promised to offer $29 battery repairs through this year. If you believe you're eligible but haven't received an email by then, you can contact Apple support separately to apply for the credit.
