Guillaume Ngoie Mwamba, director of the Expanded Program on Immunization, was the first Congolese to receive the vaccine in Mbandaka. On Monday, the World Health Organization said that it had delivered over 7,500 dozes of the Ebola vaccine to the outbreak-stricken country.

The health ministry says there are now 28 confirmed Ebola cases, 21 probable ones and two suspected.

The vaccination campaign will then move to the other two affected areas, the Bikoro and Iboko health zones.

The Ministry of Health (MoH) and the Ghana Health Service (GHD) have described social media reports about an outbreak of Ebola in Ghana as untrue and misleading.

The World Health Organization said 33 people, a lot of them front-line health care workers, were vaccinated against Ebola on Monday in Mbandaka, a city of more than one million people.

"These data underscore the value of ongoing health promotion efforts to prevent sporadic transmission or future outbreaks including messaging that aims to reverse misconceptions about Ebola transmission and prevention, to clarify duration and modes of transmission from survivors, and to address stigma that survivors might face as they recover, rebuild their lives, and reintegrate into communities", the authors wrote.

Health officials administered an experimental vaccine on Monday to 33 medical workers and Mbandaka residents, World Health Organisation (WHO) spokesperson Tarik Jasarevic told reporters in Geneva. More than 11,300 people died in the West Africa epidemic.

DRC Prepares for Mass Ebola Vaccinations

The denial followed social media reports that claimed an Ebola outbreak in Ghana and that the health authority was trying to suppress the information.

The WHO said vaccine manufacturer Merck has provided it with 8,640 doses of the vaccine, and an additional 8,000 doses are expected to be available in the coming days. One of the major challenges surrounding the vaccine will be to keep it in properly cold conditions in the DRC's tropical climate.

Congo President Joseph Kabila and his Cabinet agreed Saturday to increase funds for the Ebola emergency to more than $4 million.

The DRC has faced nine outbreaks of the haemmorhagic fever since it was discovered along the country's Ebola River in 1976. The virus is initially transmitted to people from wild animals, including bats and monkeys. "It is spread via contact with bodily fluids of those infected".

Reuters reported that Ebola experts from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are preparing to go to the Congo now that the virus has spread to an urban area, increasing the risk of a global outbreak.

Despite the growing number of Ebola victims within DRC, Overcamp said her past experience has shown her that worldwide collaboration can effectively overcome a risky outbreak.
