About half the participants reported drinking more than 100g per week, and 8.4% drank more than 350g per week. The government's health website says that while most Canadians drink in moderation, it's estimated that four to five million of them engage in "high risk drinking, which is linked to motor vehicle accidents, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder and other health issues, family problems, crime and violence". The researchers focused on who developed - and died from - stroke and different forms of heart disease. Drinking raises the risk of both cancer and heart disease, and one study suggested that drinking accounts for 15 percent of breast cancer cases.
That's about 10 standard drinks a week and is significantly lower than the no more than two-a-day limit imposed under official Australian Guidelines.
The global team of researchers analyzed almost 600,000 people aged 30-100 from 19 different countries as part of 80 different studies.
Although the pool of data was extensive, information about alcohol consumption was self-reported, so the study's findings are limited.
On average, each unit of alcohol consumed over the 100g threshold, slices about 15 minutes off a person's life - about the same as a cigarette, David Spiegelhalter, a professor in the "understanding of risk" at the University of Cambridge said in a comment on the report. He told The Guardian that previous evidence shows it is likely that people drinking a lot more than 43 units are likely to lose even more life expectancy, and he would not be surprised if the heaviest drinkers lost as many years of life as a smoker.
Nutrition professor Jaap Seidell is pleased with the new study, he said to the Volkskrant.
The study urged countries to change their recommendations to no more than 100 grams of alcohol per week, or roughly seven drinks in the U.S. More than that starts to whittle your life by months and years, the researchers found.
The new recommended 100g a week is equivalent to between five and six standard United Kingdom glasses of wine or pints of beer.
"This research adds to a growing number of studies supporting current United Kingdom guidelines for lower risk drinking".
This research recalibrates the concept of moderate drinking and gives a more complicated, nuanced interpretation of how alcohol affects cardiovascular health for better or worse.
The upper recommended limit for men in the U.S. is nearly 25 units of alcohol per week.
"The incidence of Type II diabetes, coronary heart disease, haemorrhagic stroke, pancreatitis, osteoporosis, macular degeneration and gall bladder disease are just some of the conditions that are lower in sensible drinkers. By contrast, alcohol consumption was associated with a slightly lower risk of non-fatal heart attacks". None had a known history of cardiovascular disease.
However other countries reportedly still have much higher limits than the UK.
The study "is a serious wake-up call for many countries", Jeremy Pearson of the British Heart Foundation said in a statement.
As for the threshold for low-risk drinking, White said, "there's no magic number here".
The researchers particularly looked at cardiovascular diseases in this study.
