  • Opposition MP Nikol Pashinyan announces the start of 'velvet revolution'

Leader of the Civil Contract party MP Nikol Pashinyan called on opposition members to carry out such actions, TASS reported from the venue.

More than 16,000 people rallied in Armenia's capital on Wednesday to protest the election of former president Serzh Sarkisian as prime minister, viewed by the opposition as a power grab. On April 17the initiations "Refuse Serzh" and "My Step" were holding protests in the Republic Square of Yerevan.

Sargsyan stepped down because of term limits, but he will continue to play the dominant role as prime minister under a new political system that envisages a mostly ceremonial role for president.

Parliament voted in Sarksyan as prime minister Tuesday, sparking the largest protest in Armenia in years, with tens of thousands taking to the streets.

Sarkisian, a former military officer, has been in charge of the landlocked South Caucasus nation of 2.9 million people for a decade.

Maria Titizian, the editor-in-chief of EVN Report, an Armenian online magazine, said Sargisyan had promised before a 2015 referendum on constitutional reforms that he would not seek the post of the prime minister.

"We are happy to learn that the majority of the protesters and the police show a respectful and responsible behavior during the last few days".

On Monday police used stun grenades against protesters who tried to break through a barbed wire cordon to get to the parliament building.

Police also detained three demonstrators involved in the brief seizure of the public radio headquarters on Saturday. We are however concerned about the conflicts that happen between the police and the demonstrators from time to time where there have also been several injured.
