In a separate statement, Oklahoma City Thunder's vice president of broadcasting said the statement made by Davis was "offensive and inappropriate".

Earlier this week, Oklahoma City Thunder play-by-play announcer Brian Davis came under fire for using a controversial phrase while discussing Russell Westbrook's play in a game.

"It is with great remorse and humility that I accept this suspension for the insensitive words I used during Wednesday's broadcast", Davis told ESPN.

Also during Wednesday's game, Westbrook became the first player in National Basketball Association history to average a triple-double in multiple seasons.

After hitting the nothing-but-net shot, Davis, perhaps wanting to convey how hard a shot that was to make, spoke a racist colloquialism more common during the antebellum through the Jim Crow eras of American history. "'Cotton-picking mind' was probably an adjective, he got a triple-double again...Russell Westbrook is an incredible player, and I would take it as a compliment".

Cotton picking was the primary responsibility for black slaves in the South, so the term can be offensive when used by a white person to describe a black person.

Davis, who has done play-by-play for the Thunder on Fox Sports Oklahoma for eight seasons, didn't appear to use the phrase maliciously, but came under fire for using it anyway.

"Again, we've expressed to him strongly that it was offensive and inappropriate, and that's all we can do for right now", Mahoney said on Thursday.

It is indeed unfortunate that Davis used the term, which is easily recognizable as racist, in his broadcast on Wednesday night.

But the Thunder's response to the statement is commendable. Many took to social media to complain about Davis' choice of words.
