Security Research Labs stressed that exploiting Android handsets is still hard, but as hackers become incentivised to target smartphones, ensuring devices are kept current with patches is important.

The vendors of the Android Phones claims that if you are updating your phones regularly then you are having all the latest security patches. What is more concerning is that in some cases, manufacturers intentionally misrepresented when the device had last been patched.

Xiaomi, Nokia, HTC, Motorola and LG all made the list, as well, while TCL and ZTE fared the worst in the study, with, on average, not having installed more than four of the patches they claimed to have installed on a given device.

The two discovered that some OEM vendors claim to deliver up-to-date security updates, but many skip installing some patches on users' devices, for unknown reasons.

In a statement provided to TechCrunch, Google pointed to the importance of various different means used to secure the Android ecosystem.

After two years of painstakingly reviewing hundreds of devices, the researchers determined some manufacturers not only failed to update their devices entirely but also lied to customers about doing so.

This is giving Android users a literal false sense of security and leaving them open to potentially malicious software exploits.

On the user's part, it's nearly impossible to know which patches are missing and which are actually installed. The post was about a security patch in which the company has demonstrated the updated DNS settings via a screenshot.

The company also argued that some missing patches could be to do with a specific phone not offering an affected feature, or a feature being removed entirely as opposed to patching it.

Over 1200 random devices were tested, and several devices were found to be lacking multiple security updates, which is critical for the phone's security, making it vulnerable to multiple hacks.

In several cases, the chip makers were found to be the main culprits.

The patch gaps and bugs are found in the chips rather than in its operating system.

By analyzing the results of SnoopSnitch reports, the team of at Security Research Labs found that phones developed by Sony, Samsung, and Wiko have between zero and one missed patch, from the samples available. The vendor has to primarily depend on the chipmaker to offer a security patch and not the OS.
