Starbucks to close stores for bias training

  • The handcuffing and arrest of a pair of black men from a Philadelphia Starbucks outlet has drawn outrage and prompted a police investigation

Video: After two black men were arrested while waiting at a Philadelphia Starbucks on April 12, the company and the police are facing fierce criticism. The company halted operations at more than 7,000 stores in February 2008 to "teach, educate and share our love of coffee, and the art of espresso", as then CEO Howard Schultz said in a memo to employees.

"This is a systemic issue", Malachi said. "Like all retail establishments in our city, Starbucks should be a place where everyone is treated the same, no matter the color of their skin".

The woman behind the register informed the man that she was the store manager. One person in the crowd hoisted a sign that read, "Is she fired or nah?" - a reference to the store manager who called police.

The friend arrived as the men were being led out in handcuffs by police.

One of the videos of the arrest rocketed across social media, with more than 10 million views by Tuesday afternoon.

The CEO of Starbucks has met with the two black men arrested in a Philadelphia store last week, the company said.

Nevertheless, that outcry continued on a rainy Monday morning, with protests planned for the afternoon as well.

A Starbucks spokeswoman confirmed the meeting happened Monday but declined to give any details.

At 5 p.m., the officers were en route to their headquarters with two arrests. Last month, it claimed it had achieved 100% pay equity across gender and race for all its USA employees, and committed to doing the same for its overseas operations, an initiative publicly backed by equality activist and tennis legend Billie Jean King. Airy. "It's very important to note that this is not specific to Starbucks and police react here the same way they do all across the city".

Starbucks says the employee who initially complained to police is no longer "at that store". One of those stores opened in Ferguson, Missouri, the scene of 2014 protests following the police shooting of Michael Brown, one of several such killings that moved Schultz to launch the Race Together campaign.

Johnson was interviewed by The Associated Press on Monday morning.

Johnson pledged more training for store managers on company guidelines and unconscious bias.

We also will further train our partners to better know when police assistance is warranted. If there's a threat or a major disturbance in the store, certainly that would be an appropriate time to call the police. In this case, none of that occurred.

"I've spent the last few days in Philadelphia with my leadership team listening to the community, learning what we did wrong and the steps we need to take to fix it", Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson said in the statement. According to CNN, the two men have agreed to meet with him.

"You have lost your opportunity to have a voice", Malachi said. We don't want you to talk at all. "You're just a figurehead, but we're going to get to those in power and we're going to make sure that we shut you down", a protester tells Hymes in the KYW video.

After the rally, a Starbucks employee declined comment.

According to Commissioner Richard Ross, officers received a trespassing call from Starbucks after the men allegedly used the restroom without making a purchase, which goes against company policy. "Our store manager never intended for these men to be arrested and this should never have escalated as it did".

"Most importantly, I hope to meet personally with the two men who were arrested to offer a face-to-face apology", Johnson said.

Police blocked off the portion of 18th Street that runs parallel to the store.

"Starbucks stands firmly against discrimination or racial profiling", he said.

Starbucks is one of the most high-profile and beloved brands in the world and its long-time CEO Howard Schultz was not one to shy away from hard conversations over thorny issues such as gay marriage, gun control and Congressional gridlock.
