Prince had no idea he was taking deadly fentanyl, prosecutor says

  • Charging Decision in Prince's Death Coming Thursday

She says Prince deserves for the truth to come out, and she doesn't think it will. Saturday will mark the second anniversary of his death.

"Notably, the evidence demonstrates that Prince had no known Vicodin or fentanyl prescriptions", Metz said.

That's according to F. Clayton Tyler, an attorney for the Prince friend, Kirk Johnson.

Tyler says Johnson continues to deny that he had anything to do with Prince's death.

After his death, his longtime collaborator and protege Sheila E told "Entertainment Tonight" that Prince had been suffering from hip and knee pain from decades of intense performing, much of it in heels. Federal authorities said earlier Thursday that the doctor had agreed to pay a civil penalty to resolve the case. Authorities determined that Prince did not die from Percocet.

The doctor has reportedly admitted to writing prescriptions for Percocet in Johnson's name, with the knowledge that the painkillers were actually intended for Prince, but "investigators do not suspect Schulenberg of supplying the fentanyl that caused Prince's death", the Star Tribune reported.

"I am mindful that is a most unusual and extraordinary case involving a world famous celebrity", Metz said. Evidence indicates he likely took counterfeit Vicodin in a Bayer bottle, Metz said.

After Metz's announcement, the U.S. Attorney's Office in Minneapolis issued a statement saying it hasn't received any credible evidence that would support federal criminal charges.

Associated Press writer Amy Forliti contributed to this report.

Schulenberg's attorney statement also declares: "The United States Attorneys' Office for the District of Minnesota has confirmed that he is not a target in any criminal inquiry and there have been no allegations made by the Government that Dr. Schulenberg had any role in Prince's death".

It was Andrew Kornfeld who discovered Prince's unresponsive body the morning of April 21, 2016, when he arrived at Paisley Park for a meeting on how to proceed with his treatment.

"The fact that criminal charges are not brought certainly does not mean that some person or persons associated with Prince did not assist or enable Prince in obtaining the counterfeit Vicodin", he said. And Metz says there's no evidence any of the people surrounding Prince gave him counterfeit Vicodin or knew he had it. But that pain medication wasn't what killed Prince.

Smith said if he were alive today, Prince would be playing "serious music" about the climate we're living in.

At a press conference Metz told reporters that despite an exhaustive investigation conducted by local, state and federal investigators, authorities were unable to find the source of counterfeit Vicodin pills laced with Fentanyl that claimed the life of the legendary musician. It came hours after documents revealed a doctor accused of illegally prescribing an opioid for Prince had agreed to pay $30,000 to settle a federal civil violation.

"The evidence shows they followed Prince's directions in maintaining his privacy".

Prince (57) was found dead at his Paisley Park complex near Minneapolis on April 21, 2016. Prince said he was feeling antsy and asked about opiate withdrawal symptoms.

Metz detailed how Prince had suffered from severe pain for years, and visited physician Michael Todd Schulenberg on April 7, 2016 as he was experiencing numbness in his hands and legs, and had vomited the night before.

Later that week, Johnson contacted Schulenberg to request painkillers for Prince ahead of an April 14 concert performance in Atlanta.
