  • Pence To Russia: 'You're On The Wrong Side Of History'

Vice President Pence said on Saturday that the Trump administration stood ready to respond to any potential retaliatory measures by Syria or allies, after the U.S., France and the United Kingdom launched military strikes on the country.

A deal on the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) could be reached within the next several weeks, Vice President Mike Pence told reporters while in Lima, Peru, for the Summit of the Americas. 'It's time for Russian Federation to get the message President Trump delivered last night.

US officials have emphasized that the allied attack on Syria was not meant to provoke or punish Damascus, but rather sought to target the country's chemical arsenal specifically.

The joint operation was in response to a suspected chemical attack in the city of Douma last week.

The vice president appreciated the Summit of the Americas after Trump earlier that week declared plans to attend the function he might craft a response to the chemical attack, which is why US authorities state there's proof of Assad's involvement.

Calling the strike "successful" and an "extraordinary success", Trump said the strike "degraded and crippled" and "significantly eroded" Syria's ability to use chemical weapons.

Pence went one step further than most USA officials have said publicly since the strikes so far, claiming that further use of chemical weapons will mean a "price to pay" - military action.

In condemning the US-led attack, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad insisted on Saturday that the missile strikes would only strengthen his nation's resolve to keep its fight against Western-backed terror groups and "crush terrorism in every inch of the nation".

Earlier in the day, Pentagon officials suggested they had proof that the Assad regime was behind the attack, but said they couldn't elaborate on the information because it was classified.

Pence said that the U.S. acted on information from the intelligence community and allies, and they had a high degree of confidence that 'at a minimum, ' chlorine was used in the attack, and possibly sarin.

Noting that "you're known by the company you keep", Pence said Russian Federation needs to join other nations in opposing the use of chemical weapons in Syria and "live up to the commitments they made".

"And to be clear, the U.S.is also ready to take additional action in a sustained way to ensure that Syria understands that there will be a price to pay if they ever use chemical weapons again".
