NBC Grills Facebook's Sheryl Sandberg Over Slow Response to Privacy Breach

Sandberg said businesses demanded "targeted ads" that are only shown to certain users, but she insisted no personal information was passed on to them. They gave us assurances and it wasn't until other people told us it wasn't true, ' she said.

Billionaire Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is due to testify about the scandal before US Congress next week.

Sandberg acknowledged that the site did not appropriately handle the breach that allowed Cambridge Analytica to get information from as many as 87 million Facebook users.

That said, even some conservatives admit that Facebook could have done a better job informing its users of what it does with their data.

"We really believed in social experiences". For some inexplicable reason, however, what Facebook does with its users' information has only now become an issue. But we were way too idealistic.

With the wounds from the Cambridge Analytica data scandal still raw, Facebook has banned another third-party company from its platform over the improper use of data - this time it's Canadian political consulting firm AggregateIQ. Previous estimates had put the number of users affected at 50 million.

And its leaders are apologizing.

Private data of over 5.6 lakh Indian Facebook users was also compromised by a private marketing firm that later sold the personal details acquired through a quiz app to Cambridge Analytica. "I'm really sorry for that. That's why we are doing the audit".

Not that this matters very much to individual humans: data from Facebook has been circulating for so long outside of Facebook, it can't have very much more to give about any particular user, anyway. However, Facebook is still purporting to have a lot more control over the situation than it may actually have; putting together the picture that's emerged from the last couple of weeks, things are a huge mess. At $40,000 per violation, the total cost could theoretically run into the billions. She also said the company has been in constant contact with the FTC.

Sandberg wouldn't take full responsibility, saying "every candidate at every level used Facebook".

"This work has not progressed past the planning phase, and we have not received, shared, or analysed anyone's data", a Facebook spokesperson told CNBC.

Sandberg also touched on another contentious issue for Facebook: the role it will play in the upcoming elections and in the USA political system as a whole. What we are focused on is making sure those possible use cases get shut down.

AIQ denies ever being part of CA or SCL and says it has never accessed any improperly obtained Facebook data.

It is a game that will continue to challenge the company.
