Cambridge Analytica whistleblower Christopher Wylie at a news conference in central London. Instead, a decent chunk of the personal information is loose in the wild, and no amount of handwaving from Mark Zuckerberg and Co. will be enough to put it back in the Facebook-shaped bottle. Vote Leave denies any wrongdoing.

Nearly a week after Mark Zuckerberg published a post acknowledging Facebook's shortcomings in the Cambridge Analytica saga, and only a couple of days after a public apology via newspapers in the United Kingdom and the US, Facebook has finally rolled out the first batch of changes on the platform related to how users see and access data.

"Rahul Gandhi needs to apologise to the nation for trying to subvert India's election process using the Brahmastra of Cambridge Analytica".

He also questioned who in Colorado, or elsewhere, might be in possession of the data if Cambridge Analytica claims it deleted the data and if no one connected to the Senate Majority Fund had access.

In response, Congress communications-in charge Randeep Surjewala said the minister is "perpetually lying" and challenged the party to "show all proof and then register an FIR".

The government release said the ministry sent a letter to the company asking what "proactive measures are being taken to ensure the safety, security and privacy of such large user data and to prevent its misuse by any third party?" and whether the personal data of Indian voters was "compromised by Cambridge Analytica" or any other entity.

SCL was set up by Alexander Nix, but when Steve Bannon later came onboard it operated under the name Cambridge Analytica, which Wylie said on Tuesday was aimed at appealing to Bannon's interest in focusing on the academic side of its work.

"Last week showed how much more work we [Facebook] need to do to enforce our policies and help people understand how Facebook works and the choices they have over their data". The country is holding a national election next year.

The document shared by Wylie claimed that SCL India has a database of over 600 districts and 7 lakhs villages, which is constantly being updated. The company also operates instant messaging app WhatsApp which recently introduced payments on its platform, giving the company access to financial data of Indian users. "We said the server should be hosted in India only".

In India, the Justice Srikrishna Committee is to look into the issues of data privacy and protection. "So it would be in their full control", he said. I don't remember a national project but I know regionally.

This article has been excerpted from: "The Mind-Benders: How to Harvest Facebook Data, Brainwash Voters, and Swing Elections".

In the 2009 general elections, SCL India managed the campaign of a number of Lok Sabha candidates.

But Nikhil Pahwa, a technology expert, said that signs that the company worked in India are worrying.

In an interview with Recode and MSNBC to be broadcast next week, he said: "We could make a ton of money if we monetised our customers, if our customers were our product". "Things have been very polarized here".
