GM Appoints New Cadillac President After US Sales Fall

"It is paramount that we capitalize immediately on the opportunities that arise from this rate of change", Ammann said. Nysschen leaves after leading Cadillac to the second best sales year on record globally last year, but an 8 per cent decline in US sales-the second straight drop in a market where the brand's name was once synonymous with luxury. Somewhat ironically, the product portion of the de Nysschen era only just began at the 2018 NY auto show with the introduction of the 2019 Cadillac XT4. The change at the top "will further accelerate our efforts in that regard", the statement quoted Mr. Amman as saying.

Cadillac's US sales a year ago fell 8.0% to 156,440 units, while BMW deliveries slumped a more modest 3.4% to 352,790 light vehicles and demand at Mercedes was off just 1.4% to 375,409, reflecting the ability of the Germans to respond more quickly to the market's shift.

In De Nysschen's defense, Cadillac launched a full-size sedan, the CT6, just as U.S. sales were shifting to SUVs.

There were disagreements between De Nysschen and Cadillac dealers as he tried to reduce their numbers as part of an initiative called Project Pinnacle.

De Nysschen also presided over the effective debut of Cadillac's Super Cruise hand-free highway self-driving feature, which now challenges Tesla's Autopilot as the best semi-autonomous consumer system available. Ltd., which Nysschen left to join GM, have picked up market share in recent years.

But results didn't come quickly enough at a time when GM has pegged Cadillac as the next big cash cow for its operations next to pickups and SUVs. In four years, Cadillac only managed to market the CT6 large sedan and the XT5 compact SUV with this new naming convention.

While there's likely to be relatively little change to the Cadillac product plan now rolling out, observers expect to see Carlisle amp up the brand's marketing efforts, especially when it comes to individual products. A few months later he moved the brand's headquarters from Detroit to NY in an effort to boost Cadillac's image and attract younger buyers. Cadillac's new boss has also announced the elimination of the XTS sedan before 2019. Carlisle had been managing director of GM's Canadian operations. Overall, GM Canada led the country in retail auto sales.

Mr. Carlisle said the potential for Cadillac globally is "incredible".

Carlisle will report to Dan Ammann.

Travis Hester, now vice president-global product programs at GM, replaces Carlisle in Canada. He is a GM lifer, beginning his career in 1982 as an industrial engineering co-op student at the Oshawa, Canada, assembly plant.
