He also warned that increasing tensions over the war-ravaged Arab country could lead to "full-blown military escalation", urging the UNSC to "act responsibly in these dangerous circumstances".

"These are not the actions of a man, they are crimes of a monster", Mr Trump said, referring to Mr Assad. In a message Prime Minister May announced early on Saturday morning that she has authorised British armed forces to "conduct coordinated and targeted strikes to degrade the Syrian regime's chemical weapons capability and deter their use". The UK defence ministry said the strikes were "successful".

Macron is appearing on national television Thursday to respond to the daily concerns of the French and defend his economic policies and tax changes, which he says are aimed at modernizing the country.

"Our contemporaries need, whether they believe or do not believe, to hear from another perspective on man than the material perspective. They need to quench another thirst, which is a thirst for absolute".

The U.S., France and the United Kingdom have all said Friday's military strikes in Syria were successful. Macron's advisers said at a briefing on Saturday the strikes took place in a legal framework.

France was one of the three countries along with the US and the UK on Friday in response to the alleged chemical incident in the city of Douma that occurred.

Both May and Macron said strong evidence pointed to the Assad regime committing the Douma massacre.

"The use of chemical weapons by anyone, anywhere, under any circumstances is illegal and utterly reprehensible", Mr Turnbull said.

Macron acknowledged the anger that his reforms, including a loosening of France's famously rigid labour laws and a shake-up of heavily-indebted rail operator SNCF, have sparked in some sectors of society. Associated Press reporters in Damascus saw smoke rising from east Damascus. So it's time to strike back, more so than ever as Macron seems intent on replacing Britain as America's go-to friend in Europe. "Innocence is not allowed". Tristram Hunt, the former MP and current director of the V&A, described it as a 'remarkable extension of French cultural prowess'.

Reports circulated that the Dumayr air base outside Damascus was one of the other targets hit.

"We specifically identified these targets to mitigate the risk of Russian forces being involved", Mr Mattis said.

But Bourdin and Plenel made good use of their chance, prompting combative exchanges on the sweeping reforms he has been pursuing over the past year.

Brig. Gen. Ali Mayhoub, who read the statement on Syrian TV, said "our air defenses effectively shot down most of them". President Bashar Assad's government denies responsibility.

Earlier this week, missiles were launched at the T-4 airbase in central Homs Governorate.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed support for the strikes.
