House speaker Paul Ryan is the latest to depart, announcing on Wednesday that he will not seek reelection in November.

"I am announcing that this year will be my last one as a member of the House", Ryan told reporters at a news conference.

"You realize you hold the office for a small part of our history... and I think we have achieved a heck of a lot", said Ryan.

While it's tempting to pin all of the blame for Ryan's decision to leave on Trump, Sabato drew attention to the fact that the previous Speaker of the House, Republican John Boehner, retired less than three years ago because of his own headaches dealing with the current GOP.

So while he will surely be remembered as one of the least effective speakers of the House we've ever had, you can't say Paul Ryan didn't faithfully represent his party. "If I stay, they will only know me as a weekend dad". "I just can't let that happen".

Friends said Mr Ryan, a long-time champion of tax reform, was ready to step down after passing a tax reform bill, according to the Axios news site.

Ryan is likely to weigh in publicly on who should succeed him as speaker.

Republicans do have some time to find a Ryan replacement.

But Wisconsin Republican Party Chairman Brad Courtney dismissed such predictions, saying, "Wisconsin Republicans are committed to keeping this congressional seat and I am confident that our eventual nominee will uphold Paul Ryan's legacy of principled, conservative leadership". The aide added in an email that Ryan's decision will be "a morale buster" for Republicans, and could lead to even more GOP retirements.

Ryan, 48, joins a growing list of Republicans leaving Congress. And now Ryan is on his way out, meaning that, within a decade, two of the three Young Guns authors will have left politics.

The president has generally known as Ryan a "very weak and ineffective chief" and criticized the Speaker for his "zero help" throughout the election.

The announcement comes as Republicans face already serious prospects of losing their majority in the House in this fall's midterm elections.

Rumors of Ryan's departure had been circulating for months, even after he seemed to dismiss them late a year ago.

Asked about the deficit outlook, Mr Ryan emphasised that he meant to continue working on "entitlement reform", in a reference to massive programmes including healthcare and social security. There's Paul Nehlen, a white nationalist who got banned from Twitter and booted from the Wisconsin GOP.

But at the time he also said, after 20 years in Congress, he would sit down with his wife later this year to map out their future.

Even Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic leader in the House and former speaker herself, found some kind words for her Republican counterpart.

After the Republican ticket of Mitt Romney and running mate Paul Ryan lost the 2012 presidential election, the Republican National Committee conducted an autopsy that examined, among other things, the GOP's challenge in winning black voters.

During the 2016 campaign, when then-candidate Donald Trump accused an Indiana-born judge of bias in a civil case against Trump because of his Mexican heritage, Ryan said the attacks on a federal judge constituted "the textbook definition of a racist comment". During his nearly twenty years in the House, Speaker Ryan has epitomized what it means to lead our country forward with strong conservative values and commitment to a limited government.
