  • For The First Time Since 1959, Cuba's Leader Won't Be Named Castro

As president, Raúl Castro took steps to modernize Cuba's centrally planned economy - an unfinished effort that's yielded mixed results.

For the first time since 1959, Cuba is about to be governed by someone other than a Castro as Raul who took over from his elder brother Fidel who died in late 2016 is retiring from the presidency.

Cuba's National Assembly is expected to decide on a new president.

The men who have run Cuba for almost six decades began life in a remote, rural part of the island known as Biran, sons of a wealthy farmer.

Vietnam's Communist Party Secretary General Nguyen Phu Trong (L, front row) and Cuba's First Vice-President Miguel Diaz-Canel (R, front row) attend a wreath-laying ceremony at Revolution Square in Havana, Cuba March 29, 2018.

So whoever is elected president of the Council of State is top dog?

Castro's moves to open the economy have largely been frozen or reversed as soon as they began to generate conspicuous shows of wealth by the new entrepreneurial class in a country officially dedicated to equality among its citizens.

But the satellite images don't show much, and he says he doesn't yearn to visit his homeland.

"The only Castro left in the 1605 member of the National Assembly is Mariela Castro", said Dr. Gomez.

Cuba's first non-Castro leader since the 1959 revolution will be named by lawmakers on the island as soon as Wednesday, heading a younger generation of Communist officials who will be under pressure from ordinary Cubans to breathe life into the economy.

Raul Castro is working to ensure a smooth transition from him and his small group of former guerrillas to a new generation that can maintain the government's grip on power in the face of economic stagnation, an aging population and waning revolutionary fervour among Cuban youth attuned more to global consumer culture than the anti-capitalist, nationalist messaging of the state-run media.

Cuban experts have described Diaz-Canel as a "party ideologue" and "pragmatist" who is not expected to push for dramatic political change.

Both Fidel and Raul Castro turned to radical politics at a young age as they went to school first in the eastern city of Santiago, later at the University of Havana. In fact, observers say, Diaz-Canel's ideology appears, if anything, to have hardened in recent years. "They are tired of this process because they have been expecting it for so long". "Even if it's another man, it's always going to be a Castro government", said Ariel Ortiz, an unemployed 24-year-old in Havana. Castro has said, however, that he intends to remain as head of the Communist Party.
