  • Apple's next iPhone display revolution might begin with its mysterious AR glasses

Apple declined to comment on the report, which cited unnamed sources as saying Apple is designing its own chips for Mac computers and could begin using them instead of Intel processors in 2020. Bloomberg noted the project will likely involve stages of transition to the new chips. Intel's shares dropped slightly with the news but Stifel analyst Kevin Cassidy said he believed the market was "over reacting" to the report on Apple's plans.

Interestingly, Digitimes expects Apple to start developing microLED panels for the Apple Watch as early as the end of the year. Apple already designs its own A-series chips found in iPhones and iPads. The company will also be able to produce new systems without having to depend on when Intel would be able to put new chips into production. Rumors say Apple is working on a new Apple Watch with a larger screen, which might be (slightly) more suitable for watching Instagram's photo feed.

If that happens, the Mac computer line would have processors similar to the recent A11 bionic chip in the iPhone 8 and iPhone X. All iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, and Apple TVs now have Apple-made chips based on technology from software designer Arm Holdings Plc. "We have better control over timing, over cost and over quality", Chief Financial Officer Luca Maestri said of Apple's chip efforts previous year. That means Apple will be giving Intel the boot when it comes to processors. It was way back in 2010 that Steve Jobs himself, skinny as a rail, debuted the ARM-based Apple A4 chip alongside the then-new iPad in San Francisco. With its own chips, Apple would have the freedom to release new product models without relying on Intel's processor roadmap. The only current Apple devices with screens larger than MacBooks are iMac desktops. It is worth mentioning that Apple will be the first PC maker to make use of its own processors as opposed to the other major players like HP and Dell who use Intel processors.

Intel shares were up a fraction, near 49, in morning trading on the stock market today.

Intel reportedly receives around five per cent of its annual revenue from Apple. While Apple is down the list of computer sellers by unit shipments, it's third when measured by revenue a year ago, highlighting the premium status of its products. It was a partnership that shook up the PC industry and saw Apple shift away from chips co-developed by IBM and Motorola.

Instagram's Apple Watch app was one of the social apps that made its debut in the early times of watchOS. Aside from the chips in Macs, the multinational tech group also uses the chipmaker's processors in some iPhones and iPads.
