Under the executive order, a task force chaired by the US Treasury Secretary will investigate the postal service's business model-including pricing-and offer recommendations on reform. A second White House official disputed the notion that the order was directed at Amazon, and also said that the task force was charged with improving the mail service.

In an executive order issued just shy of 9 p.m. last night, Trump demanded the review of the post office's finances. Trump has repeatedly said that Amazon should be paying USPS more.

What will happen is anyone's guess at this point, as a few important variables are unknown, such as whether the USPS will indeed hike its rates, how much such an increase would be, and how many packages the agency now delivers for Amazon.

Since signing a landmark five-year contract in 2013 to deliver packages on Sundays, Amazon.com Inc. and the U.S. Postal Service have declared their business relationship a success.

The order said a decline in first-class mail volume, coupled with legal mandates that force the USPS to incur substantial and inflexible costs, resulted in a deficit where revenues can no longer fund pension liabilities and retiree health obligations owed to current employees.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly called out Amazon in recent weeks, arguing that the retailer must pay the USPS more per package because it is ripping off the service.

News of the task force came amid Trump's rhetorical war on Amazon, in which he has accused the e-commerce company of using the USPS to prop up its business at the expense of the taxpayer.

Three people were injured Wednesday in a crash involving a United States Postal Service truck and a Chrysler 300, authorities said. Package volumes grew by 11.4 percent last year, according to USPS and documents show that package revenue contributed a net total of more than $7.1 billion to the agency's bottom line during fiscal year 2017. Amazon will still need human labor and can build more infrastructure in metro areas, but can't overtake the USPS infrastructure in place. Not only will USPS prices increase, but FedEx and UPS will be able to charge customers and still remain competitive. It was not mentioned in the president's order creating the commission.
