Top Republican Ryan leads GOP backlash against Trump tariffs

  • Sen. Jeff Flake R-Arizona attends a news briefing with other GOP lawmakers

In Wisconsin, which went for Trump by the narrowest of margins, Republican Gov. Scott Walker has warned that tariffs could hurt the state's canning and beer industries. Sen.

Flake is now drafting legislation that would nullify the tariffs, worrying they will disrupt the economy.

"I couldn't be reelected in my party right now", Flake told NBC's "Meet the Press".

Republicans worked for days both behind the scenes and with public pleas to try to get Trump to back down, or significantly curtail, his threat of tariffs.

Flake abandoned his re-election bid previous year because, he said, he did not want to compromise his integrity to try to win over pro-Trump voters in Arizona's August 28 Republican primary.

Even if Flake does convince the Senate to take action, it would take two-thirds vote to override a potential veto from the president.

Republicans on Capitol Hill reacted angrily to President Donald Trump's announcement Thursday that he is going forward with new tariffs on steel and aluminum, arguing that the move will harm the economy and that it threatens to start a broader trade war.

Flake this week is traveling to New Hampshire, the first presidential primary state, which stoked speculation of a possible presidential bid against Trump.

Of course, when Trump follows through with the tariff threat, he could imperil the future of the USA auto industry, which President Obama pulled back from the brink of collapse.

The tariffs will not initially apply to Canada and Mexico, the president said, adding security and trade partners could negotiate to seek exemptions. "I don't think we're at the point where we need to consider that bill yet", said Sen.

"If we don't trade, we don't grow". Congressional Republicans are anxious that Trump's trade policy will mitigate any economic benefits from their 2017 tax cuts, particularly in a midterm election year when Republicans want to run on a platform of economic success.

Mr. Trump has all but declared that he will run for reelection, unveiling his new campaign slogan at a Saturday rally in Moon Township, Pennsylvania: "Keep America Great!" Trump used a vulgar phrase to describe Todd at the rally. "I don't think we should be going against the president before we see what the deal is. We should not normalize this behavior'".
