  • NASA's Parker Solar Probe Could Send Your Name to the Sun

According to NASA, the Parker Solar Probe will be the first ever spacecraft traveling to Sun and it will be launched this summer. Once you've done that you'll need to confirm your request by clicking on an email link sent from NASA.

NASA will launch the Parker Solar Probe this summer, and it will possibly bring your name along in its journey to the sun.

But, be quick, as the cutoff date is April 27, while the shuttle itself could launch as soon as July 31.

Many NASA missions have continued to focus on this complex space environment defined by our star.

At its closest approach to the sun, the Parker spacecraft will be going at approximately 4,30,000 miles per hour. Image via Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. The rocket, about the measure of a little auto, will travel specifically into the Sun's climate around four million miles from the star's surface.

The primary science goals for the mission are to trace how energy and heat move through the solar corona and to explore what accelerates the solar wind as well as solar energetic particles.

The size of a small vehicle, it can travel from Washington DC to Tokyo in under a minute, NASA said. Nicola Fox, of the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, is the mission project scientist.

NASA named the spacecraft the Parker Solar Probe in honor of astrophysicist Eugene Parker. The spacecraft's onboard instruments should be able to operate at room temperature despite these extreme external conditions, NASA officials said.

The announcement was made at a ceremony at the University of Chicago, where Parker serves as the S Chandrasekhar Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus, Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics.

To perform its investigations, the spacecraft and instruments will be protected from the sun's heat by a 4.5-inch-thick (11.4 cm) carbon-composite shield, which will need to withstand temperatures outside the spacecraft that reach almost 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit (1,371 degrees C). During its final orbit in 2025, the star's ferocity will grow too great and breach the composite shield, destroying the probe as well as the chip and sending the disintegrated remnants sailing on the very solar winds the probe was sent to study.

Send your name to the Sun, via a microchip installed on NASA's upcoming Parker Solar Probe mission. Since our Sun is one of the important reasons behind the existence of life in this universe, scientists have been waiting over more than six decades to know the star from upfront.

Even the most dedicated sky watching hobbyists have to accept the fact that observing the awesome accomplishments of NASA and other space-faring organizations is as close as they'll get to participating in the exploration of the cosmos.
