How could America benefit from a meeting with North Korea?

  • North Korean 'caution' seen in announcing stance on upcoming summits Seoul

North Korea has a history of deceit and can not be trusted despite claims it wants to talk peace, says a national security analyst.

Trump made the announcement after the head of a South Korean delegation that met Kim last week said the North Korean leader had committed to denuclearization and pledged to refrain from nuclear and missile tests. North Korea has at least 20 nuclear weapons, and much more experience and expertise in their development. That doesn't seem to be the case here - this South Korean-brokered meeting has come somewhat out of the blue. Trump said he will meet the North Korean leader by May.

The West sees the Korean crisis, a lingering relic of the Cold War, as a clash between good and evil. The two leaders have since been in a heated exchange.

The bottom line: Trump stressed that if his demands are not met, the US will withdraw from the deal.

China is claiming credit for the breakthrough in US-North Korea relations.

"I feel they're approaching this matter with caution and they need time to organize their stance".

The meeting would mark the first time a sitting American president has met with a North Korean leader, noted Laura M. Luehrmann, Wright State University political science professor and director of the program in worldwide and comparative politics.

"What does North Korea mean by the suggestion that it will consider denuclearization as a condition for these talks?" she added. Saddam Hussein gave up his nuclear weapons programme (involuntarily) after the first Gulf War in 1990-91, and 12 years later the United States invaded Iraq, overthrew Saddam, and hanged him. That idea may well be appealing to Mr Trump, though the same can not be said of his Asian allies, South Korea and Japan. "We think Kim Jong Un is the only partner in North Korea who has any authority that can make any decision". Last year, Hirono wrote to Trump to urge him to fill the ambassadorship, and several other positions that are critical to finding a diplomatic solution to de-escalate tensions with North Korea. I remember the stir in Colombo during the 1976 Nonaligned Nations' Conference, which I was covering for The Observer in London, as unofficial reports circulated of North Korean soldiers axing to death two US Army officers engaged in a routine operation to cut down trees and clear a portion of the demilitarised zone at Panmunjom.

It is hard to imagine a better way of sabotaging a deproliferation agreement with North Korea than betraying one with Iran. Dayton would likely be on the list for a second or third wave of attacks, he said.

'I would advise against that sort of encounter, 'said Malcolm Davis, Australian Strategic Policy Institute. The future of the US-South Korea alliance may well be in the balance. "We give them that and they do the nasty stuff". Both of these (South Korea and Japan), we have extraordinarily close and friendly military and economic relationships.
