Ford Motor Co. on Wednesday announced a safety recall for 1.4 million of its cars in North America, saying that because of issues with the steering wheel bolts, the steering wheel could detach. If that's not fixed, the steering wheel could detach from the auto, causing the driver to lose the ability to steer.

Ford models affected by this recall are the Ford Fusion and the Lincoln MKZ.

The recall affects 1.3 million vehicles in the United States, about 62,500 in Canada and a little more than 14,000 in Mexico.

These cars were made in two different factories in Flat Rock in MI and in Hermosillo in Mexico.

The automaker says it is aware of two accidents with one injury allegedly related to this problem. Gradually loosening steering wheel bolts could eventually cause steering wheels to detach from the steering wheel column.

All of the cars in question were manufactured from 2013 to 2018 at the two assembly plants. Dealerships will replace the defective bolt free of charge.

USA Today found that there have been 10 incidents where Ford Fusion steering wheels have fallen off.

In affected vehicles, repeated high-energy clutch slip input made while a driver changes gears can lead to premature clutch lining wear, reducing the mechanical properties of pressure plate material. Some reported feeling unsafe to the point of no longer wanting to drive the vehicle.

While at it, Ford has other "uplifting news" for Fusion owners, more specifically for those who drive 2013-15 models equipped with the 1.6-liter Sigma GTDI engine and B6 manual transmission.

In the same announcement, Ford also recalled 6,000 manual transmission cars because of a clutch plate defect that could start a fire.
