  • Florida prosecutors seeking death penalty in Parkland high school shooting

Broward County prosecutors will seek the death penalty for Nikolas Cruz, the 19-year-old accused of killing 17 students and teachers at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland last month.

The State filed notice in the Circuit Court of the 17th Judicial District on Tuesday, according to WSVN-TV. Last week Cruz, above, appeared before magistrate court via video where 17 attempted murder charges were added by the grand jury to the existing premeditated murder charges.

Prosecutors will seek the death penalty for suspected Florida shooter Nikolas Cruz. Mr Finkelstein told the Associated Press.

Cruz now "stands mute" before the charges, having withdrawn a written "not guilty" plea after being indicted by the grand jury.

The Parkland massacre has sparked a wave of student activism, renewed political tension over gun control and even forced the normally pro-firearm friendly Florida Legislature to pass a law tightening access to the weapons.

Broward Health spokeswoman Jennifer Smith said Tuesday that Anthony Borges' condition has now been upgraded to fair. The commission, a special panel that meets every 20 years, has the power to ask voters to approve changes to the state's constitution.

The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student is credited with saving the lives of 20 students by attempting to close and lock a classroom door during the February 14 attack where 17 people were killed in Parkland.

His intestinal area has been sealed off and he is breathing on his own after being taken off a ventilator, family attorney Alex Arreaza said.

The announcement came down Tuesday afternoon when they filed a Notice of Intent in his case.

This decision means that south Florida will likely see a lengthy prosecution with emotional testimony about what unfolded inside Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

"Our kids are not asking to do away with the 2nd Amendment".
