  • Fitbit Versa brings female health tracking and a much-improved design

The new Fitbit Versa introduces a much better looking design (subjectively speaking) with rounded corners instead of the sharp rectangular look of its predecessor.

For kids, Ace will display fitness and sleep goals that are appropriate for their age. While the Fitbit Versa does lack some of the features that were included in the Ionic such as Global Positioning System functionality, it's more fully features overall and is built with a slimmer profile that puts it much more inline with the luxury Apple device it intends to compete with. That is not the only thing Fitbit is banking on though.

Fitbit's Surge fitness tracker (left) alongside the Blaze (center) and Ionic (right) smartwatches. It's being offered in black with a black aluminum case, gray with a silver aluminum case or peach with a rose gold aluminum case.

The company recently announced a new set of products including the Fitbit Ace, which is a tracker designed for children 8 years old and up, as well a much anticipated new smartwatch, the Fitbit Versa. The basic version of the Versa also forgoes the ability to make mobile payments, though a $230 special edition gets the Fitbit Pay feature back. The woven bands are exclusive to the Special Edition.

On the software side, Fitbit announced the addition of female health tracking. But Fitbit's is the first fitness watch to offer a broad menu of women-specific health tracking. It can log periods, track your cycle & gauge ovulation. Bands options include varying colors of silicone, leather, cloth, and stainless steel.

What really does stand out about the Fitbit Versa, though, is the very fashionable design of the product. The device also gives users motivational messages and daily guidances. But the Versa watch can also answer texts, download apps, and store music.

Fitbit Versa looks a lot like an Apple Watch - though it's a bit smaller - and is less fitness-focused than the watch Fitbit debuted past year, called Fitbit Ionic. The screen itself is considerably improved, sharing similar specifications to the Fitbit Ionic. It provides encouragement to be active, and with the new Fitbit family account, parents also can control who their kids connect with in the Fitbit app and track their activity. Parents will be required to make an account for children aged 12 and under to get them started on the Fitbit Ace.

When it comes the dashboard kids see on their Fitbit app, the app won't show metrics like body fat percentage and calorie burn to its young users.

If anything, it looks somewhere inbetween the Apple Watch 3 and a Fitbit Ionic.

We think it's a big improvement over the angular Ionic smartwatch, released previous year.

The company is also debuting its new female health tracking where female users can track their menstrual cycle and view holistic health data. The navigation is completely different, with three buttons to Apple Watch's button-crown combo. It runs on Fitbit OS 2.0 that supports iPhone (4S and later) and Android (4.3 and later). It also features automatic sleep stages tracking to ensure you're getting a proper night's rest. Fitbit says the dashboard will change over time, showing more personalized information and even offering up celebrations for milestones reached.
