  • Crash The passenger flight from Dhaka Bangladesh landed in Kathmandu Nepal but ended up careening off the runway and crashing in a nearby field

The aviation authorities said they had recovered the flight data recorder from the charred wreckage of the plane, which burst into flames after crashing into a football field near Kathmandu airport on Monday, killing 49 people.

But Imran Asif, CEO of US-Bangla Airlines, told reporters in Dhaka that "we can not claim this definitely at the moment, but we are suspecting that the Kathmandu air traffic control tower might have misled our pilots to land on the wrong runway".

Those aboard included 33 Nepali passengers, with 32 from Bangladesh, one from China and one from the Maldives.

The Bombardier Q400 series aircraft was carrying 71 people from the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka when it tried to land in conditions of visibility that weather officials said exceeded 6 km (4 miles), with clouds at one end of the runway and a light tailwind of six to seven knots. I was sitting near the window and I could go out "is the description of another. It is among the 10 most risky airports in the world".

The Indian minister also offered any assistance required in Kathmandu, and shared thoughts and prayers for those injured in the crash and with people of Bangladesh, according to Indian High Commission in Dhaka.

Minutes before the landing, the pilot is heard asking: "Are we cleared to land?" but the controller asks the plane to turn. Asked by the control tower if there was a problem, he replied in the negative. Transmissions by the Kathmandu tower controller show that, despite being cleared to land on runway 02, the flight began deviating from its course. The only thing heard on the line after that is the controller asking fire trucks to be immediately sent to the runway. "He is a very skilled pilot and we have not even had any technical malfunctions over three years", he said.

Sultan had more than 5,000 hours flying experience and was specially trained to land at the airport, Islam said.

Plumes of black smoke could be seen rising out from the football field east of the sole runway to Nepal's only global airport.

Then the ATC yelled "fire", indicating that aircraft was about to crash.

TRT World's Staci Bivens reports.

"There was a mess, people were running on the aircraft, many ambulances and firefighters".

Nepal's poor air safety record has been blamed largely on inadequate maintenance, inexperienced pilots and substandard management.

Bombardier is a twin-engine, medium-range and turboprop aircraft.

Two days later, two pilots were killed when a small passenger plane crash-landed in the country's hilly midwest. It was flying from Dhaka to Kathmandu.

"When the plane entered Kathmandu Valley the aircraft was supposed to take the route of Koteshwor while landing but it took another route and missed the airport".

"The plane then took a final approach, from a low height, between the north-west tower and Nepal Army's hanger, and landed in the middle of runway, passing the drainage, breaking the fence, after which it plunged onto the ditch before catching fire", added Gautam.
