"THQ Nordic has entered into an agreement to acquire Koch Media GmbH, including, inter alia, the games developer and publisher Deep Silver with AAA-intellectual property rights such as Saints Row, Dead Island and exclusive license for Metro", the press release reads.
This acquisition by THQ Nordic means that not only do they now own Deep Silver but they also own the studio's Volition and Dambuster too.
In addition to Deep Silver's publishing contracts, THQ Nordic will also acquire their internal studios. Deep Silver also partially funded and published Mighty No. 9. Koch Media will continue to operate as a separate entity under THQ Nordic once the transaction is complete, with no restructuring expected to occur.
The acquisition was news to some Deep Silver employees, who learned as we did about the merger.
"Koch Media has a long history of profitability despite losses incurred from some less successful game releases", THQ Nordic CEO, Lars Wingefors, says in the announcement.
THQ went bankrupt, its properties were sold off and the legacy of that company was buried.
Deep Silver has had a tough time of it in recent years, with a couple of high-profile video game flops sparking layoffs. With the competence THQ Nordic possesses on management level, Koch Media will be better positioned to deliver the full potential of its development projects in the future.
THQ Nordic has stated that although it won't be interfering with any of the in-development projects that are now slated, it will be closely monitoring and delegating resources to Koch's game division.
The folks at THQ Nordic do seem to have a good sense of timing. With Nordic Games later snapping up the THQ name in 2013, the studio has now got its hands back on all those major franchises once more.
This move of course sees the likes of Saints Row and the Metro again attached to the THQ name, where it joins the likes of Biomutant, This Is the Police, and ELEX.
