  • Software May Have Given Daimler Help in Passing Emissions Test

The newspaper cited confidential documents it had seen.

Daimler faces ongoing investigations by USA and German authorities into excess diesel emissions. One piece of software allegedly switched of emissions cleaning after 26 kilometers, allowing the vehicle to showcase normal emission behavior during regulatory testing.

Bild am Sonntag reports USA investigators uncovered evidence suggesting Mercedes diesel vehicles featured software that altered the emissions system behavior. Another program apparently "allowed the emissions cleaning system to recognize whether the auto was being tested based on speed or acceleration patterns", according to Reuters.

There has been growing scrutiny of diesel vehicles since Volkswagen admitted in 2015 to installing secret software on 580,000 United States vehicles that allowed them to emit up to 40 times legally allowable emissions while meeting standards when tested by regulators.

Software that turns an emissions control system on and off depending on whether the vehicle is being tested in a lab or not is called a "defeat device", and unless the automaker gets explicit permission to have one, a defeat device's inclusion in an auto system is illegal in the US.

The paper cited emails from the automaker's engineers questioning whether the software functions were legal.

A spokesperson for Daimler declined to make a comment with regard to the content of the secret documents that were uncovered, saying that the Germany-based company was cooperating fully with authorities in the U.S. and agreed to a strict form of confidentiality with the U.S. Justice Department.

Mercedes also issued a recall of over three million diesel vehicles in Europe back in July.

The spokesperson added that USA authorities are aware of the documents in question and have not filed any complaint regarding them.
