  • Out there waiting to be found

NASA's Kepler mission was launched in 2009 to detect exoplanets and it was crippled in 2013 due to some mechanical failure. In turn, 95 of these planets have proved to be new discoveries... These planets have different sizes right from giant gaseous planets like Jupiter to rigid and rocky Earth or Sub-Earth sized planets that orbit around their host star.

According to a doctoral student studying at the Technical University of Denmark, the data has to provide information on 275 candidates which the scientists examined and found 149 real exoplanets. This doesn't necessarily mean the other candidates are definitely not exoplanets, just that more evidence is needed to confirm.

An worldwide team of researchers from institutions including NASA, Caltech, Denmark, and the University of California, Berkeley, today added 95 new exoplanets to the list.

Of the 95 exoplanets, one of the most interesting is in the orbit of a particularly bright star: "We validated a planet on a 10 day orbit around a star called HD 212657, which is now the brightest star found by either the Kepler or K2 missions to host a validated planet".

One of the planets detected was orbiting a bright star. After waiting for few time, the Kepler spacecraft shined once again and that is when it was named as K2 Mission.

However, astronomers and engineers devised a way to repurpose and save the space telescope by changing its field of view periodically. At present, the NASA's K2 mission had discovered more than 100 new planets adding to the list of 200 other planets that were discovered over its course of discovery.

A candidate exoplanet is measured by the shadow it causes as it crosses its host star.

The search for new exoplanets is now one of the most exciting areas of space science, one that is providing fascinating insights into our universe.

"Exoplanets are a very exciting field of space science". Jessie Christiansen, an astronomer at NASA's Exoplanet Archive was quoted in a media report saying, "There are no surprises, per se, but it's a great new haul of planets, and plenty of fodder for exploring the individual systems within the catalog".

"Planets around brilliant stars are vital in light of the fact that space experts can take in a considerable measure about them from ground-based observatories". "As more planets are discovered, astronomers will develop a much better picture of the nature of exoplanets which in turn will allow us to place our own solar system into a galactic context".

The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) is scheduled for a Spring launch and will search about 90% of the sky during its mission.

After detecting the first exoplanets in the 1990s, it has become clear that planets around other stars are the rule rather than the exception.

It's a major breakthrough that reveals new planets that range in size from smaller than Earth to celestial bodies even bigger than Jupiter.
