Production of the 30.72 TB SSD kicked off last month, though Samsung plans to add to the family later in 2018.
Samsung Electronics has announced the production of the PM1643, touted as the industry's largest capacity SAS SSD at 30.72TB, which is double the capacity and performance of the previous 15.36TB high-capacity lineup released back in March 2016. The drive uses 32 1TB NAND flash packages, each of which contains 16 stacked layers of 512Gb V-NAND chips.
Samsung also boasts of the performance these drives can deliver, with the PM1643 capable of hitting "up to" 400,000 input/output operations per second (IOPS) in the company's own random read tests, and 50,000 IOPS in random write tests. Now this year, Samsung is taking it a step further with the new "PM1643", a 30TB SSD built on the latest 512Gb V-NAND. These performance benchmarks are four times the random read performance and three times the sequential read performance of a typical 2.5-inch SATA SSD. In total, this SSD ships with 40GB of DRAM on board- this is also the first time that TSV applied DRAM has been used in an SSD.
The drive also comes with a new controller that integrates nine main and sub controllers used in previous SSDs.
That's created to give better data retention and recovery rates after sudden power failures, and an error correction code (ECC) algorithm for less storage maintenance. Complementing the hardware Samsung provides software for metadata protection as well as data retention and recovery from sudden power failures. The mean time between failures is 2 million hours.
When exactly the PM1643 will go on sale and for how much isn't known, but Samsung says now it's got this form factor settled it'll expand its range of SAS SSDs later this year, with 16.36TB, 7.68TB, 3.84TB, 1.92TB, 960GB, and 800GB versions to come.
The company's goal is to target various market segments such as financial services, education, pharmaceutical, business services, communications sectors, government, healthcare, oil and gas, social media, and retail.
