Prince Henrik, the French-born husband of Danish monarch Queen Margrethe who publicly vented his frustration at not being the social equal of his wife or their son in line to become Denmark's king, died late Tuesday.

The controversial French-born prince had been diagnosed with dementia a year ago and was admitted to hospital in January with a lung infection.

Yesterday, the Royal Family revealed that Prince Henrik had been transferred from city hospital Rigshospitalet to Fredensborg Castle to spend his final days in peace with his family. "Her Majesty the Queen and the two sons were at his side".

"People are just used to considering Prince Henrik as. a little dog that follows behind and gets a sugar cube once in a while", he said.

He was 83, and had been diagnosed with a benign tumor two weeks ago, Reuters reported. "I wish you and all members of the Danish royal family courage and fortitude at this hard time", Putin wrote in a telegram.

In accordance with his wishes, rather than being buried at a sarcophagus prepared for him and his wife in Roskilde Cathedral, Henrik's body will be cremated and half of the ashes scattered in Danish waters and half buried in the garden of Fredensborg Castle, north of Copenhagen, where he died.

Prince Henrik was among the country's most controversial members of the royal family, because he previously spoke out about being unhappy that he was never made king and only given the title of prince consort after his marriage to Queen Margrethe in 1967.

Prince Henrik was 83 at the time of his death and had been struggling with pneumonia.

To a Danish tabloid, he said the royal staff had shunted him into "third place in the royal hierarchy".

In 2016, he retired from official duties, renouncing the title of Prince Consort. They have two sons, Crown Prince Frederik and Prince Joachim.

In 2013, he collaborated with Danish pop group Michael Learns To Rock, playing the piano on a track recorded for the king of Thailand.

On Twitter, a popular radio show host wrote: "Words can not describe how much I love Henrik!"
