Among the many former teammates and managers to speak fondly of Miller is Brian Kerr, who gave the Corkman his global debut in 2004, shortly after Miller's move from Celtic to Manchester United.

Among deeply moving tributes at his funeral mass in rural Ireland, including that he achieved the rarest feat of living his dreams, one message that stood out was that he was a sportsman with decency, humour, honesty, integrity and humility.

Ex-Celtic and Manchester United midfielder Miller died last week, aged 36, after losing his battle with cancer.

The ex-Celtic and Manchester United footballer was hailed as an "inspiration" at the Church of St John the Baptist in Ovens, Co.

Among those in attendance at the funeral were former Celtic manager and current Ireland manager Martin O'Neill, Irish assistant manager Roy Keane and FAI chief executive John Delaney.

Miller grew up in Ovens, and although he played Gaelic football, his real passion was soccer, with a fondness for Celtic taken from his father Billy, a Scotsman from Motherwell. And he did. He dreamed of playing for Man United.

He was also said to be entranced, besotted and utterly in love with his wife Claire and that he gave every fibre of his being to his children's happiness.

Celtic players wore black armbands in Mr Miller's memory during their Scottish Cup victory over Partick Thistle on Saturday.

"Liam attacked his condition with a ferocity and a determination to survive it that is impossible to comprehend unless you saw it", he said.

Fr Hickey added: "Liam fought his illness with the same resilience with which he played".

Mr Sheedy urged mourners to remember Miller for his life off the pitch, rather than on it.

Mr Sheedy said if he lived a dozen lifetimes he would not be "half the man" Miller was and that they were mourning an individual who was among "the best in the world".

In a eulogy, Mr McStay, who supervised Liam's arrival in Glasgow as a talented schoolboy, said: "Nothing seemed to faze him. Rest in peace Liam Miller, a gentleman".

Miller, who was capped 21 times for the Republic of Ireland, died at Marymount Hospice in Cork city on Friday.

"I had the good fortune to see him as a 16 year old, just before he went to Celtic".

"In his too short life he contributed so much, from his making his professional debut in 2000 and earning his first cap for the Republic of Ireland in 2004, going on to play for clubs such as Cork City, Celtic, Manchester United and Hibernian", Mr Higgins said.

The service took place at the Church of St. John the Baptist, where Miller was christened and confirmed.
