The article, featured in the daily newspaper Sinar Harian, features bullets points highlighting qualities that are supposedly common in gay and lesbian people.

As part of the story, there was a checklist on how to spot a gay person.

Homosexuality is illegal in Malaysia and carries a sentence of up to 20 years under colonial-era sodomy laws.

As for lesbians. the newspaper says they have a tendency to hug one another and belittle members of the opposite sex.

Kumar's outspoken YouTube video had been viewed tens of thousands of times on social media in less than 24 hours. "With an article like this you're only going to take away lives".

He also pointed out the hypocrisy of the checklist, adding: "I know a lot of priests and really religious people who love keeping beards".

"That's what you're going to do, and if that's what you're happy doing because you want less gay people in this country, good job to you". "That's how stupid this is", he said. LGBT people, along with liberal and Shia Muslims, are seen as a threat by Malaysia's Sunni conservatives such as Hanafiah Malik, who told the newspaper there is an urgent need to stop the "rise" of homosexuality.

In March 2017, the release of Disney's Beauty and the Beast was postponed in Malaysia, because it contained "a gay moment".

Last year, the Health Ministry launched a contest for the young on how to "prevent" homosexuality.

In the wake of those violent incidents, some called for softening the anti-gay rhetoric in the country, the Guardian reported.

It comes after a spate of recent deaths of people thought to be gay, lesbian and transgender. Last year, for instance, an 18-year-old student was burned to death by classmates who suspected him of being gay. A few months later, a 27-year-old transgender woman was stabbed and shot inside her florist shop.

Previous year a Human Rights Watch report found discrimination against LGBT people was "pervasive" in Malaysia.
